Professional Education Program

     

ADMISSION I - Admission to the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh does not guarantee admission to the College of Education and Human Services.There is limited enrollment for each area of licensure. Admission to the College of Education and Human Services is determined by admission criteria set by the Curriculum and Instruction Department (Elementary/Secondary Education) and the Special Education Department.

     
 
  • Admission applications to the College of Education and Human Services are due either September 15 (for acceptance the following spring) or February 15 (for acceptance the following fall). Admission consideration is available to students enrolled at UW Oshkosh, to those seeking enrollment as transfer students from two-year campus UW Colleges, or the College of Menominee Nation, and to students from the Wisconsin Technical College System seeking licensure in Early Childhood Education. 
  • Continuous enrollment along with maintaining eligibility requirements is necessary to maintain Admission I.

TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR CONSIDERATION, the candidate must meet the following minimum requirements:

 
  • Pass the Praxis I: Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST).  Passing scores are required before either the September 15 or February 15 application deadline.  It is recommended that this test be taken the second semester of your Freshman year or no later than one semester prior to enrollment in Individual, School & Society or Sophomore Practicum.  Please allow enough time to take this test and receive passing scores before the application deadline.  Students must retake parts of the PPST for which passing scores have not been met.  You may take the Computerized PPST only once per calendar month, and no more than 6 times within a 12 month period.  Students who have not met this requirement are not eligible to apply.

Minimum Passing scores for the State of Wisconsin:

    Reading-175                Writing-174             Math-173

     

  • Earn a grade of "C" or better in Fundamentals of Speech (96-111) - Take this course of first or second semester of your Freshman year.
  • Complete or will have completed a minimum of 40 credits by the end of the current semester
  • Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.75
  • Choose a licensure area (major), including a minor where applicable. Admission will be made to specific licensure areas.  Any changes in major or minor will require a new application to that program. 
  • Regular Education majors (elementary/secondary) apply when they are enrolled in the course Individual,  School & Society.  Special Education and Dual majors apply during their Sophomore Practicum semester.
     

TO MAKE APPLICATION: Purchase Admission I Handbook at University Books & More in Reeve Union.  The following items are DUE FEBRUARY 15 or SEPTEMBER 15 to Professional Education Program (PEP) Office, N/E 113:

 
  • Completed Application for Admission I

  • Copy of PPST scores (you keep the original; give us a copy)

  • Completed Disclosure Statement

  • Receipt for Criminal Background Check attached to completed form (Purchase at Cashier's Office)

  • A clear tuberculosis (TB) test on file at the Health Center (Radford) or through your own physician.  Please provide documentation if test is done through your physician).

ADMISSION I  - This is the First Phase of Portfolio Development. The following items are submitted in a portfolio during the semester students are enrolled in Individual, School & Society or Sophomore Practicum. Transfer students who have already taken the course Individual, School & Society or Sophomore Practicum, should contact the

Professional Education Office, N/E 113, for instructions.

 

  _____ Recommendation form completed by a General Education Instructor

  _____ Recommendation form completed by an adult who has observed you in work or volunteer roles

  _____ Personal Letter of Introduction

  _____ General Education GPA in specific courses

  _____ Reflection paper on a project, exam or paper from a General Education Course

               SAVE a piece of your work

  _____ Interview with faculty/staff   

  _____ Successful completion of Pre-Admission I Education Core Courses

  _____ Reflection paper on a project, exam or paper from a Professional Education Course

              SAVE a piece of your work

  _____ Student Self-Evaluation for the reflection paper from a Professional Education Course

  _____ Satisfactory completion of first half of Human Relations Requirement     

     

ADMISSION II - This is the Second Phase of Portfolio Development. Admission II Portfolios are submitted the semester before student teaching.  To be considered for Admission II and Student Teaching, the following

requirements must be met:

 

_____  Passing scores on Praxis II: Subject Assessments*     

_____ Completion of all undergraduate course work with GPA of 3.00 cumulative, professional, major, minor)

_____ Satisfactory completion of Human Relations Requirement

_____ Curriculum – “best sample” example of ability to plan and implement instruction

_____ Evidence of an understanding of issues, insights and ideas related to Classroom Management

_____ Written Self-assessment of a recent clinical or practicum experience

_____ Satisfactory completion of clinical experiences

_____ Additional evidence and interview as determined by department

 

*PRAXIS II Subject Assessments

Praxis II: Subject Assessment is a test that measures subject matter knowledge. It is not an exam about how you teach. It is an exam that assesses your knowledge about what you teach . Depending on major/minor, students may need to take more than one test. Passing scores for each test have been established by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI). Students must provide evidence that they have passed the appropriate test(s) before they will be approved for student teaching. Students are eligible to take the Praxis II test(s) after they have been admitted to the College of Education and Human Services.

STUDENT TEACHING - Capstone Experience

Students are eligible to apply for student teaching when all undergraduate course work has been completed and all Admission II requirements have been successfully met.

EXIT PORTFOLIO - This is the Final Phase of Portfolio Development . After successfully completing student

teaching and prior to graduation and licensure, students complete these Program Completion Exit Requirements:

 

_____ Educational Autobiography/Personal Philosophy of Education

_____ Multi-cultural Synthesis Project

_____ Pre-Professional Development Plan

_____ Student Teaching/Intern University Supervisor and Cooperating Teacher Evaluations

 

TEACHER LICENSURE - Students are eligible to apply for a teaching license upon successful completion of a full semester of student teaching and submission of the Exit Portfolio.

     

GRADUATION - Students apply for graduation the semester before they plan to graduate. Applications are available

on Titan Web.
